What is your favorite thing about being an independent author?

Really, I think it’s just the fact I’m doing what I love to do and able to both entertain and make money from it. I hold no real love for the label of being self-published. I got into this game to try and get noticed by publishers the way many musicians do nowadays, not to try to one-up them. And it’s been going pretty well so far!

What is the most challenging thing about being an independent author?

Earning respect and credibility. Understandably, many readers are wary of self-published work. There is a ton of crap out there that I can completely identify with customers feeling put off by. It’s a tough road to walk as an author – especially one who wishes to be taken seriously. But it truly is rewarding when it works out, and people start to appreciate what it is you do.

How do you manage to keep yourself motivated to meet deadlines when the only person you’re responsible to is you?

The only time you’re responsible for only yourself as a writer is before your first book comes out. After that, you have hundreds or thousands of people expecting the next book…especially if you’re writing a series. You don’t want to annoy readers by saying, “The next book will be out come January!” and then you wait until July to finish it. Something like that is career suicide.

So yeah, when I look at it like this deadlines are really easy to meet.

What has most surprised you in your career as an author?

I know I said earlier that gaining credibility is the toughest part of this gig, but it also represents the most surprising thing that’s happened to me. I’ve had so many fine folks receive my work with such appreciation and enthusiasm it’s sometimes unbelievable.

If you could have one career dream realized, what would it be?

To be able to quit my day job and write full time. Oh, the fantasy!

Thank you so much to the author for taking the time to answer my questions!
