Potterthon: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Read-A-Long

Jun 30, 2012

"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much."
I have been meaning to re-read Harry Potter for a long time now and I decided, what a better time to start than with these fellow bloggers. I am really excited! Want to join in on the fun? Link up here also and read along with us :)

Top Ten Tuesday | Top 10 Books @ ALA

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
Top 10 Books I am Most Excited to Read
(from ALA)
This past weekend, I got the opportunity to attend ALA and I got a lot of great books. But because I knew some sort of controversy would ensue due to the fact that bloggers were able to attend and then get a large part of the ARC's handed out, I decided to keep my hauls to myself. Instead, for my first list I decided I would just write up a list of the top ten books I got that I am most excited to read.

1. The Raft by S.A. Bodeen
I saw the cover for this one and I was just like :O It just looks so interesting!
The publisher definitely recommended it so I am really looking forward to reading this soon.

2. Ten by Gretchen McNeil
I had no idea this was inspired by And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
until the publisher told me, and since that is one of my favorite books, I knew I had to read it. I can't wait!

3. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
She is just an awesome author and this book sounds just awesome,
so I am sure I will love it :)

4. Cinder & Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
I still haven't read Cinder but now that I also have a copy
of Scarlet on my shelf, I must read them!

5. Erasing Time by C.J. Hill
This one sounds really awesome! And I have heard
only good things about it :)

6. Yesterday by C.K. Kelly Martin
That cover is just...wow. And it sounds like an amazing
read that was definitely recommended by several people.

7. The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna
Quite a few bloggers have been raving about this
one and it sounds like a fantastic book!

8. Carnival of Souls by Melissa Marr
That cover alone creeps me out! I can't wait to find
out what's within the pages of this book.

9. Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys
I love her writing and she was really excited to share with me what
her new book was about. I am really expecting to love this one too :)

10. The Archived by Victoria Schwab
This one has been pretty popular and I am intrigued. I am
very interested in finding out more about that cover too :D

Well there you have it! Those are the books I am most excited about that I got at ALA. There are a lot more and this was sure a tough list to narrow down, but I will probably be reading a few of these asap. Thanks for reading and I hope everyone has an awesome weekend :)

Author Interview | J.L. Bryan

Jun 29, 2012

Today I have J.L. Bryan stopping by for an interview in which he shares with us a little about his book Jenny Pox, his other projects, and himself. Enjoy and make sure to check out my review of Jenny Pox, which can be found here.

Find J.L. Bryan: Website | Twitter | Goodreads | Amazon

---------------------------------------------------------------

Describe Jenny Pox in five words.

Dark, moody, gory, lovely, funny.

The paranormal genre is extremely popular right now and geared more towards teens. What motivated you to write a paranormal for adults using teenage characters instead?

I wrote Jenny Pox in 2009 thinking of it as a horror novel. I wasn't thinking about young-adult paranormal at all, and didn't realize it was such a major genre, so I didn't realize anyone would take a horror novel about teenagers to be a young-adult novel. That's just sort of how the cards have fallen. I am actually writing some young adult books now, since my readers seem to enjoy those.

Jenny Pox is mainly from the perspective of both Jenny and Ashleigh. Was it difficult to write two female points-of-view?

No, I just wrote them as individuals with certain backgrounds, abilities, and motivations instead of focusing on "how to write females." I think that would have stressed me too much :)

If Jenny Pox and the other Paranormal books came to life, would you want to live in them for a day if you could?

No! It's much too dark of a universe. I'd rather not hang out there.

Do you have any other projects you are currently working on?

I've just put out Fairyland, the fourth book in my newer series, Songs of Magic. Those are much lighter and more fun, though they still have some spooky stuff. They're good for all ages, which of course means they're very different from the Jenny Pox books.

What are your hobbies when you’re not writing?

I enjoy hanging with my family and dogs at the park, going to farmer's markets, strolling the baby around...these days, I basically just take care of the baby when I'm not doing writing work!

What are three weird facts your readers might not know about you?

Three? I collect Mystery Science Theater DVDs. I like golf, but only miniature golf. I use my cat as my alarm clock.

May contain spoilers, but not really. Just proceed with caution.

Thoughts: What first caught my attention was the cover (and the fact that it was a free Kindle book on Amazon.) Then it got pushed to the bottom of my list and I wasn't planning on reading it. I was actually in the middle of a few other books when I decided to pick it up on a whim. I think maybe it was because I saw some talk about it on Twitter, but I can't remember why exactly. While I usually stay away from indie author's, I am glad that I read this one because Jenny Pox was not what I expected and it totally caught me off guard. From the first few pages, I was absolutely hooked. I figured out quite fast that Jenny Pox was in fact not the young adult paranormal romance I had been expecting. While it most definitely has paranormal elements, as well as romance, it is pretty different and horrifying read that is geared towards adults. I was captivated by such a unique story from the beginning and could not put it down until the end.

What I liked:

• The protagonist, Jenny Morton (aka Jenny Mittens): She has a rare power that infects people with "Jenny Pox," a gruesome plague, when she touches them. In order to keep people safe, she wears gloves every day and long sleeved clothing and keeps herself away from everyone. Bullied by her fellow classmates, all Jenny wants is to get out of high school and continue her isolated life, to care for her father and work to earn some money. Jenny is a character that you can't help but like. She lives a sad, lonely life but has a huge heart and I instantly connected with her. She wanted to lash out at the people who constantly hurt her, but knew that she wouldn't, and all she really wanted was to be left alone. I thought she was a great protagonist and even though she had a horrible power, she did not use it until she had to.

• The enemy, Ashleigh: Jenny Pox is told from two points of view (mostly.) We are introduced from the beginning to Jenny's enemy, Ashleigh, the kind of girl that you love to hate. She is very different to Jenny: popular, loved, admired, wanted, etc. and enjoys torturing Jenny. She is one of the few people who remember and knows about Jenny's power and she ensures that she is bullied by everyone. It is hard to understand why so many people want to be near such a cruel person, but it becomes apparent that she also has a special power that keeps people near.

• The setting: Jenny Pox takes place in a small town, with small town kind of people. I have never lived in or spent too much time in a small town, but the author was able to create a place that I was able to really see and feel which made it extremely easy to connect with, especially when getting to know the characters and their lives.

• The relationship between Seth & Jenny: At first, Seth is the guy you know you shouldn't trust. Not only is he Ashleigh's loving boyfriend, but he's also a jock, rich, has bullied Jenny, and is too good looking to be any good. Then one day, he helps Jenny in a completely surprising and unexpected way that shows...he ain't that bad after all. At least, not when Ashleigh doesn't have her hands on him. Instead, he is quite caring and it is not surprising how instantly Jenny falls for him. Their connection is powerful and fascinating. I couldn't help but root for them the whole time.

• The horror/violence: This book is filled with horrifying scenes and situations. Lots of blood, lots of guts, lots of deaths. I loved it.

• The plot: We start off learning about Jenny's powers with a few scenes from her childhood. We find out what she can do and how she must live. We then fast forward to her teenage years and the torture she lives in. Once she meets Seth, her life changes completely and the story really picks up from there. Once things start rolling, there is non-stop development until the end and I liked every second of it.

• The conclusion: Dude. The scenes leading up to the ending were gruesome, awesome and then some. It totally blew me away and kept me glued to the pages. There were a few shocking twists that left me with my jaw hanging, but the ending was wrapped up pretty nicely. There are a few questions that are left hanging in the air, so I know I need to pick up the next book to find out what happens!

What I didn't like:

• There were two things that I didn't like but they are minor so I will not say too much on them 1) Seth cheats on Ashleigh with Jenny. I am not okay with cheating and while I totally get it...how and why it happened and I know the kinds of powers involved with the whole thing, I still felt iffy about it. 2) Insta-love. It happens a little fast, sorta rushed. It wasn't bad, I just wished it would've taken a little longer for them to fall in love. But I did love their connection, so I can't complain.

Overall: Jenny Pox is an original, dark, bittersweet and terrifying story that took me by surprise. The writing is engaging, the pace is effective and the characters are relatable and likable. I definitely recommend this to adults¹ who enjoy paranormal. Jenny Pox is an addictive story that will take you on a wild ride and keep you wanting more.

About the author: J.L. Bryan studied English literature at the University of Georgia and at Oxford, with a focus on English Renaissance and Romantic literature. He also studied screenwriting at UCLA. He lives in Atlanta with his wife Christina, dogs Violet and Tiger Lily, and cats Shadow and Sue.

TGIF | Authors Are Our Celebrities

Jun 22, 2012

Authors Are Our Celebrities: Have you ever contacted
an author you admired? How did that experience go?  If not, which author would you love to have a chat with?

To be honest, I have not contacted to many authors for the blog. I am ridiculously shy and awkward and I always feel like they wouldn't have the time for me BUT a few weeks ago I did contact two different authors. I asked to interview them and they said yes so I was super excited about the whole thing.

I also once had an author contact me! She offered me a copy of her book and even signed it. I almost died of happiness. It took me a while to read it, but when I did it became one my favorites. Thank you ♥

I do have a Twitter account but I am not as active on it as I wish I was. I have a hard time even talking to other bloggers, so I haven't really talked to any authors either.

On the other hand, I have met TONS of authors (yes, I am about to show off :D but I might miss a few because I can't remember all):

Lisi Harrison
Becca Fitzpatrick ♥
Moira Young
Elizabeth Miles

Claudia Gray
Kiersten White
Anna Carey
Amy Garvey
Jessi Kirby
Lindsey Leavitt
Kristen Hubbard
Kami Garcia
Lisa Desrochers
Heather Brewer
Katie Alender

Lauren Oliver
Megan Miranda
Marie Lu
Stephanie Perkins ♥
Nina LaCour
Gayle Forman ♥
Alyson Noel
Ann Redisch Sampler ♥
Deb Caletti
Seth Grahame-Smith
Maggie Stiefvater ♥

♥ = Eeeeeeppp!

They were ALL awesome, really nice and super talkative. They are celebrities to me and I forget they are real people who are really happy I am reading/buying/loving their books. I have also interviewed quite a few authors due to blog tours, including Lisa Jewell, Brian Rowe and Jamie Manning. Check out the whole list here.

Of course, there are hundreds more I would love to meet...to name a few: J.K. Rowling, Jennifer Crusie, Vicki Lewis Thompson, Tiffanie DeBartolo (mentioned above), Stephenie Meyer, Nicholas Sparks, Julia Quinn, Lori Foster, Courtney Summers, Kendare Blake, Sarah Dessen + more! I am going to ALA this weekend (possibly starting today) and will certainly get to meet more :D

Attention Potterheads!

Weekly Recap (for a few weeks again & where I talk about going to ALA + other stuff)

Jun 17, 2012

Hello dear friends and followers! How is everyone doing? I had a good weekend, very relaxing. I had most of the week off from work and that was nice too.

This week is going to be quite eventful for me. Tomorrow is my 23rd month anniversary with my boyfriend ♥ I feel so lucky. On Thursday, I am going to Warped Tour (woot!) which, if you don't know, is an all day music festival that travels across the country all month long.

Annnnnd then, Friday through Monday is ALA! Eeep! ^-^ I am really excited about going (it's my first time!) and look forward to meeting bloggers and more authors :D I am uber excited and pleaseee let me know if you are going and would like to meet up! I am taking my boyfriend (mentioned above) with me, but would love to have lunch, a snack or even stand in line with a few of you out there who are going too! Shoot me an email and we can arrange something xD

Now back to the blog updates and such...

+ The Assassin's Curse by Cassandra Rose Clarke (For review - Angry Robot)
+ The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa (Library)
+ Poltergeeks by Sean Cummings (For review - Angry Robot)

Both The Assassin's Curse and Poltergeeks were surprise books in the mail for me, and I am not sure if I accepted review copies before I decided not to accept ARC's. Either way, thanks to Angry Robot for getting me hard copies of both books. They look fun and are pretty short so I am sure I will breeze through them :D The Immortal Rules, on the other hand, is a wee bit over 500 pages but I will try my best to be done with it before my next club meeting  (it is the book club's pick of the month!)

I am almost done with Boys Over Flowers, Vol.5 so I know I will finish that this week. I have, have, have got to finish Born Wicked this week also. I've been reading it for far too long and can't seem to finish it. I want to get started on The Immortal Rules although I am pretty sure I won't get through it this week. I also want to get started on The Forest of Hands & Teeth so I can read The Dead-Tossed Waves, because they have been sitting on my shelf since the last time I wrote a weekly recap post :P

+ What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell
+ The Syndicate by Shelena Shorts
+ Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Vol.1 by Stephenie Meyer, Young Kim
+ I Heart You, You Haunt Me by Lisa Schroeder
+ Boys Over Flowers, Vol.2 by Yoko Kamio
+ Boys Over Flowers, Vol.3 by Yoko Kamio
+ Boys Over Flowers, Vol.4 by Yoko Kamio

If you came near my blog this past week you might've seen I was participating in a read-a-thon hosted by The Book Monsters and just happened to read seven books. Sure, four were graphic novels/manga and one was written in lyric...and the other was an audiobook and I only had about 100 pages left of the last book...BUT I think I did pretty well considering I don't read more than one or two books a week and that includes manga sometimes.

While most of my posts were about the read-a-thon, I still feel like I had a good week on the blog. How was your week? Did you get any good books? Are you going to ALA?

Happy reading :)

Pick Your Thon Finish Line

This was by far the best I have ever done on a read-a-thon so I am really glad I participated. I finished a total of seven books and am almost done with two more. I've decided to set aside Fallen by Lauren Kate for now because I haven't read more than a chapter and really don't feel too inclined to read it at this time. I know that it's time will come :) Anyways, here are my final results:

Pages read: 894
Books finished: 7/10
Hours read: Unknown
Mini-challenges: 3/4

Pick Your Thon: Mini Challenge 2

Jun 13, 2012

Mini-Challenge 2: Create a Poem

Today's challenge was a bit tougher for me because I am not a natural poet nor do I read any poetry. The challenge hosted by another participant, Words I Write Crazy, was to create a poem using the book titles of the books I plan to finish for the thon, or if you are reviewing, using a review to write a poem. While I could use spare a few words, I still found it hard to create a poem, but I didn't. It's kinda short, but I'm okay with that :)

The books:
What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell
The Syndicate by Shelena Shorts
Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood
Fallen by Lauren Kate
Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Vol.1 by Stephenie Meyer, Young Kim
I Heart You, You Haunt Me by Lisa Schroeder
Boys Over Flowers, Vol.2 by Yoko Kamio

The poem:
Over Flowers
and Fallen Twilight,
I Saw The Syndicate Haunt Me.
How Novel.

"I Love You," I Lied.
I was Born Wicked.
"I Love You, too" Boy Lied.

What do you think of my poem? I only added three words, just replacing the "Heart" with "Love" and adding "too." Good luck to the other participants! :)

"Waiting On" Wednesday: Mind Games

I haven't read anything by Kiersten White (yet!) but this one sounds really good. I cannot wait to read a longer summary on it! What are you waiting for this week?

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine

Pick Your Thon: Update 1

Pages read: 334

Pick Your Thon: Mini-Challenge 1

Jun 12, 2012

Mini-Challenge 1: Organize Your Bookshelves!
Not only were my shelves a mess, but so was my room. This was quite a challenge for me to complete in one day but I did it. I started off by cleaning my room first and then worked on my shelves. They were pretty organized, I just needed to make room for some of the books that were piling up on top. Overall though, I think they turned out great and now I can go back to reading :)

Pick Your Thon Starting Line (Late Start)

Late last night, I decided to have a little mini-thon with myself to get some books out of the way. I ended up reading two books and was happy with my book progress. On Goodreads this morning, I found that I had been invited to participate in a read or review a-thon for the week. So since I was having a read-a-thon anyways, I thought it'd be fun to join in.

The Pick-Your-Thon is hosted by Kate and Kristen from The Book Monsters, and you have the choice to participate in reading or reviewing, or even both! They have a scavenger hunt, mini-challenges and prizes all set up, so it sounds like a lot of fun! Want to join in? Check out the Sign Up post here. I am really excited to start off and even though I have a late start, I technically started yesterday too :D

1. Which thon are you choosing? Readathon, Reviewathon or both? And why?
I'm going to be reading because I have plenty of books I need to catch up on :)

2. Where are you from? You can be vague or specific, up to you.
I live in Long Beach, California :D

3. Say a little bit about yourself so we can get to know you if we don't already!
Well, there's not too much to say. I'm a college student and I want to be a librarian in the near future. I've been reading for as long as I can remember and have been book blogging for a little over three years now. You can read more about me here xD

4. What are you currently reading or about to pick up to read?
I am in the middle of three different books.

5. What are your goals for this Pick Your Thon?
What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell (finish) DONE: 06.11.2012
The Syndicate by Shelena Shorts (finish) DONE: 06.11.2012
Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood (finish)

I will definitely add more if I finish my goals ahead of time. I am off work for the next three days, so it should work out for me. Good luck to everyone else participating!

Random Reads: The Way He Lived by Emily Wing Smith

Jun 4, 2012

"Basically it’s a meme where we pick a random book from our shelf to read. I’m on Goodreads so I’m using a combination of the sorting feature and Random.org to pick the book I’m going to read."
Since this meme was mentioned in the first post, I was looking forward to it. I think it's a great and fun new way to pick at least one of the books on my TBR list each month. I am always adding more books, but the list never seems to decrease. So I decided to give this a go! Like Sarah, I also used Goodreads and Random.org to pick my new read. Here's what I got:

I am still playing catch up on a few month's random reads but hopefully I will get to them this month. This month's random read is a The Way He Lived by Emily Wing Smith, which I haven't heard of in a long while. I will have to buy myself a copy because my library does not have one. Want to join in? Check out this month's Random Reads post.
